The LIFE programme

European Union support for nature conservation and climate action

LIFE is the European Union’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action. Since 1992, the LIFE Programme has supported projects aimed at conserving natural values, protecting biodiversity, improving environmental quality, reducing pollution, promoting resource efficiency, as well as mitigating climate change and adapting to its impacts, while developing sustainable solutions across Europe.

With support from the LIFE Programme, projects are implemented to protect threatened species and habitats, restore and manage natural areas, improve air and water quality, reduce pollution, promote efficient use of resources, and develop and apply practical solutions for sustainable coexistence between people and nature.

To receive LIFE Programme funding, project applicants must participate in a competitive EU-wide call for proposals, where projects face strong competition from across Europe. Funding is awarded only to the highest-quality and most innovative projects with clear environmental and climate impacts. Therefore, receiving LIFE funding demonstrates the importance of a project and its high level of professional quality.

LIFE support for the GrassLIFE2 project

The GrassLIFE2 project continues the work initiated by the Latvian Fund for Nature in conserving and restoring semi-natural grasslands. The project aims to improve the conservation status of EU-priority grassland habitats in Latvia and promote their sustainable management.

Semi-natural grasslands are among Latvia’s most biodiverse ecosystems. They provide habitats for numerous plant, insect and other species, while also delivering important ecosystem services for people.

LIFE Programme funding enables GrassLIFE2 to:

  • restore valuable semi-natural grasslands;
  • test and promote effective grassland restoration methods;
  • strengthen the community of nature farmers;
  • facilitate knowledge and experience exchange between researchers, landowners and society.

The role of the LIFE Programme in achieving the objectives of GrassLIFE2

Semi-natural grasslands cannot exist without human involvement — their conservation requires knowledge-based, targeted and appropriate management. LIFE Programme funding within the GrassLIFE2 project helps develop solutions that balance the preservation of natural values with sustainable rural land management.

Thanks to LIFE Programme support, not only rare species and habitats are conserved, but also the cultural landscapes that form an important part of Latvia’s identity. The programme ensures that future generations will have the opportunity to experience and enjoy flourishing semi-natural grasslands.
