{"id":515,"date":"2025-10-01T10:26:25","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T07:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grasslife.lv\/grasslife2-objectives\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T12:09:46","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T12:09:46","slug":"grasslife2-objectives","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/grasslife.lv\/en\/grasslife2-objectives\/","title":{"rendered":"GrassLIFE2 objectives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project GrassLIFE2:<br\/>Restoration of EU Priority Grassland Habitats and Promotion of Their Diverse Use101073829 LIFE21-NAT-LV-GrassLIFE2<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Project duration: <\/strong>1 January 2023 \u2013 31 December 2028<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\"><strong>GrassLIFE2 is a project funded by the European Union\u2019s LIFE Programme, whose goal is to restore and sustainably manage priority grassland habitats of European Union (EU) importance.<\/strong><\/mark><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The long-term objective of GrassLIFE2 is to improve the conservation status of five EU priority grassland habitat types (1630, 6120, 6210, 6230*, 6270*) in Latvia and to make their management more effective.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All grassland habitats of EU importance in Latvia are currently in an unfavourable conservation status. The reasons for this include inappropriate management, destruction (through ploughing or afforestation), as well as overgrowth. As concluded during the implementation of the GrassLIFE project, the potential for grassland restoration is significant, but it requires very close involvement of farmers and targeted, practical communication with society on grassland-related issues. Without action to restore grasslands and improve their management, their condition will continue to deteriorate. To prevent this, it is necessary to support habitat restoration on farms, test and transfer innovative grassland restoration and management methods, and demonstrate best practice approaches.    <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GrassLIFE2 is a logical continuation of the GrassLIFE project &#8211; 2023. implemented by the Latvian Fund for Nature from 2017 to 2023. Restoration and maintenance of semi-natural grasslands cannot be achieved within a single project cycle \u2013 it requires time, stakeholder engagement and policy support. Only long-term and strategic action can ensure that natural grasslands remain a permanent part of Latvia\u2019s landscape and are integrated into sustainable land management systems.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project tasks<\/h2>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Restore <strong>1260 hectares<\/strong> of priority grassland habitats of EU importance and establish an economically viable system for their sustainable management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure the <strong>availability of plant species seeds<\/strong> characteristic of Latvian natural grasslands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor restoration success, <strong>share knowledge<\/strong> and gain experience from other grassland restoration practitioners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establish a <strong>demonstration network of nature-friendly farms<\/strong> based on GrassLIFE farms to support knowledge transfer and further development of grassland management methods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improve the <strong>knowledge <\/strong>and strengthen the professional recognition of natural grassland managers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Engage society<\/strong> in grassland conservation through targeted behavioural change initiatives aimed at specific audiences.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/178.62.207.124\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/LDF_12.07.-83-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grasslife.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/LDF_12.07.-83-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grasslife.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/LDF_12.07.-83-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/grasslife.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/LDF_12.07.-83-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/grasslife.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/LDF_12.07.-83-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/grasslife.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/LDF_12.07.-83-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expected results<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In nine farms, 650 hectares of priority grassland habitats of EU importance within Natura 2000 sites have been restored, and the necessary management infrastructure has been established to ensure their appropriate long-term maintenance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improvement of the mobile grazing service established under the previous GrassLIFE project and creation of three new mobile grazing units. With their support, 570 hectares of EU priority grassland habitats will be restored in 11 Natura 2000 sites. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By supporting active local communities engaged in improving their surroundings and organising habitat restoration events, 40 hectares of priority grassland habitats of EU importance have been restored across 11 Natura 2000 sites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Seeds of plant species characteristic of Latvian semi-natural grasslands were collected and a nursery established, creating a source of native grassland plant seeds at the Institute for Environmental Solutions. The seeds obtained during the project were used to restore at least 240 hectares of grasslands. An information centre for seed collection was established at \u201cLejzemnieki\u201d in Zieme\u013cgauja.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Established a Nature farmers\u2019 school at a project demonstration farm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By developing informational materials and training farmers involved in the GrassLIFE project, seven new demonstration farms for habitat restoration and management were established. At least 77 knowledge exchange events were organised at the Nature farmers school and the demonstration farms. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By engaging experts from various fields and carrying out field assessments, restoration and management consultations were provided to at least 100 owners of semi-natural grasslands. Through informational materials, newsletters, at least five publicly accessible \u201cI want a grassland!\u201d seminars and their recordings, the knowledge gained in the project was made available to grassland habitat owners and managers beyond the project. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The success of habitat restoration activities carried out within the project was evaluated, including their impact on ecosystem services provided by restored grasslands. Comprehensive reports on restoration outcomes and project impacts were prepared. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Through organising and participating in seminars and knowledge exchange and transfer events, experience from other habitat managers and restoration practitioners was gathered, and the knowledge gained during the GrassLIFE2 project was shared with grassland restorers and managers both in Latvia and abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An economic assessment of grassland management on project farms was prepared.
